拡張新字体ではダメなのか

「日本語には正書法が存在しない」といわれますが、かえってそれが日本語の豊かさを保証しているように思えます。
美味しい、おいしい、オイシイ、OISHII、oishii、すべて日本語として間違いではありません。漢字の字体についても、同じように思います。
漢字の字体では、いわゆる康熙字典体（明治時代以降印刷物で使用されてきた「正字」といわれるもの）と、拡張新字体（当用漢字字体表の考え方を下敷きとして1983年（昭和58年）改定のJIS X 2008の字体や、かつて朝日新聞が開発した「朝日漢字」など）の問題がしばしば取り上げられる場合があります。
2000年（平成12年）に当時の国語審議会から答申された「表外漢字字体表」では、拡張新字体を否定し、あたかも「いわゆる康熙字典体」に統一すべきかのように（しかし実際には「いわゆる康熙字典体」とは認めがたいものも少なくありませんが）書かれていますが、どのような漢字・字体を使おうと自由なのが、日本語の特徴であり、豊かさなのだと思います。
話は少しそれますが、シドニーオリンピック柔道100kg超級代表の篠原信一選手は、戸籍上は「篠原」ですが、選手時代は「筿原」（違っていたらすみません）という表記にこだわっていたといわれます。当時の新聞記事も「筿原」だったように思います。そうだとすると、美しい話なのではないでしょうか。
漢字の字体・字形は、時代や用途（印刷活字か手書き文字かなど）によってさまざまであり、一義的に決められるものではありません。「当用漢字字体表」の前文に当たる「当用漢字字体表の実施に関する件」（1949年）でも「字体の不統一」と指摘されているとおりでした。
そのために、「当用漢字字体表」の「まえがき」には、「漢字の読み書きを平易にし正確にすること」を目的に「字体の標準を示した」と記されています。これは、字体を平易なものとして、漢字を国民に開かれたものにするという、民主的な考え方が背景にあるものと考えられます。
余談になりますが、2010年（平成22年）に常用漢字に追加された196字に、必ずしも当用漢字字体表の原則が適用されなかったのは、とても残念に思います。
当用漢字字体表（1949年 昭和24年）が制定されてから、75年ほどが過ぎました。当時小学1年生（6歳）以下の人たちは、習う漢字は最初から新字体でした。言い換えると現在80歳以下の人は、みな最初から新字体だったのです。すべての国民にとって新字体の時代の方が長い、しかもほとんどの人は旧字体の時代を知らないのです。
新字体が定着しているということは疑いの余地もありません。しかも、目にする漢字の9割以上が新字体です。たとえば「漢字出現頻度数調査」（1997年 平成9年 文化庁）によると96％とか、98％とか（正確な数字が出なくてすみません）が常用漢字＝新字体だったといいます。
1983年（昭和58年）にJIS X 0208が改訂され、表外字のいくつかが、当用漢字・常用漢字の新字体を模した、簡略な字形に変更されました。これらを「拡張新字体」と呼ぶことがあります。
この拡張新字体は、一部の保守派の方々から激しく非難されていました。「日本の漢字の歴史や文化を破壊するもの」とまで言われていたようです。しかし、拡張新字体によって、漢字本来の意味が失われたり、漢字の機能が損なわれたということはなかったと思います。
漢字というものを、コミュニケーションの手段と考えれば、「昔は」「本来は」こうだったという「正しさ」よりも、相手に意図が伝わるかどうかの方が大切だといえます。
新字体が当たり前になった時代にあって、「正字」を使うことがかえってコミュニケーションを阻害する場面もないとはいえないのではないでしょうか。
「かくはん」は「攪拌」でもよいですが、拡張新字体の「撹
」のほうが意図が伝わりやすい場合も少なくないでしょう。たとえば工業技術の入門テキストのような場合、「攪拌」と「撹」のどちらの方がふさわしいと思われるでしょうか。
手偏に「覚える」＋手偏に「半」と説明するときも、「攪拌」を想起できる人がどれだけいるのかというと、難しい問題だと思います。
日本語は、どのように書こうと自由です。ですから一部の保守派の方が「正字が好きだ」というのであれば否定すべき理由はありません。しかし、だからといって、「拡張新字体はまかりならん」といって、考え方の違う人を否定するのは、日本語に対する理解が根本的に間違っているとしかいいようがありません。
また、校正者が自分好みの字体（たいていは正字体）で、勝手に赤字を入れ始めたらどうなるでしょうか。筆者の権利を踏みにじったことにならないでしょうか。
もちろん、筆者の意図せざる字体に関しては、赤字なり疑問なりを入れなければならなりません。
たとえば仏教書で1カ所だけ「仏教」が「佛教」になっていれば、赤字なりエンピツなりを入れなければならないでしょう。西巣鴨にある「佛教大学」が「仏教大学」になっていたら固有名詞ですから指摘する必要があるでしょう。また「佛蘭西」が「仏蘭西」になっていたらこれも疑問出しの対象になる可能性が高いでしょう。
意図したものか、意図せざるものか、それを見極める力こそが「校正者の資質」なのではないかと思います。
